GLASS EATER is the multimedia project of NYC-based interdisciplinary designer and programmer Jeff Barbieri.

Generating an uroboric body of sound, design, software, art, and performance.

The Glass Eater moniker was conceived in 2018, invoking tactility from name alone. As an artist with auditory-tactile synesthesia, I wanted the alias itself to suggest an innate physicality, transcending the digital medium — a philosophy which continues to underpin my work.

Beginning music production at the age of 12, my work as a teenager ranged from abstract musical works to experimental audiovisual performances using custom software developed in Max. I enrolled at NYU in 2018 to study Music Technology before graduating with honors in Computer Science & Math in 2022.

At NYU my studies centered around employing technological approaches across various creative mediums, incorporating machine learning, interaction design, generative art, computer graphics, CAD, and physical prototyping. I studied under interdisciplinary artists and technologists including Luke DuBois, Ken Perlin, Luisa Pereira, Lauren Petty, Yeseul Song, Steve Litt, Craig Kapp, and Dafna Naphtali. I have continued learning outside academia, most recently taking Designing the Unthinkable: Advanced Practices in Uncertainty with Sruli Recht and School of Song’s Workshop with Daniel Lopatin AKA Oneohtrix Point Never.

I currently work at Rockwell Group LAB as a Creative Technologist and Associate. LAB is the in-house experience design studio of Rockwell Group — an architecture firm focused on hospitality and drama. My role fuses experience design with spatial interactivity to create moments of participatory storytelling within built environments. I’ve developed projects for clients including TED, the Smithsonian Institute, Bristol Meyers Squibb, Fundación Kahlo, and the Milken Institute doing narrative & concept development, spatial experiential design, full stack software development, R&D, and physical prototyping. These projects won awards including AV Awards’ Retail Project of the Year, Fuorisalone Award’s Sustainability Special Mention, TIME Magazine’s World’s Greatest Places, and USA Today’s Best New Museum.

I continue to independently work on interdisciplinary art, design, live performance, and creative direction. I am the organizer, designer & producer of the concert and installation art series RAVE STAB, which elevates the archetypal rave to a religious experience through bespoke multisensory activations. As a music producer I’ve featured alongside artists including Arca, Andy Morin, Against All Logic, and Merzbow.

Areas of interest include generative art, built environments, tactility & materiality, interaction design, computer graphics, image & video processing, CAD, physical computing, industrial + fashion design, and creative applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
